چکیده

In 2007, Kenneth Hammond published Beyond Rationality: The search for wisdom in a troubled time. In this book and in prior works, Hammond (1990; 1996) promotes the recognition and equal acceptance of two different classes of criteria for the assessment of human judgment and decision making (JDM). Coherence criteria are those that are based on normative standards of logic (or some other formal model) while correspondence criteria are based on the accuracy of predicting or judging empirical events. In his 1996 book, Hammond summarizes correspondence research:

The uses and abuses of the coherence – correspondence distinction

Kenneth Hammond introduced a distinction between coherence and correspondence criteria of rationality as a tool in the study of judgment and decision-making. This distinction has been widely used in the field. Yet, as this paper seeks to show, the relevant notions of coherence and correspondence have been progressively considered to be too narrow and have undergone non-trivial conceptual change...

Coherence and correspondence in engineering design: informing the conversation and connecting with judgment and decision-making research

I show how the coherence/correspondence distinction can inform the conversation about decision methods for engineering design. Some engineers argue for the application of multi-attribute utility theory while others argue for what they call heuristics. To clarify the differences among methods, I first ask whether each method aims at achieving coherence or correspondence. By analyzing statements ...

Convergence in a sequential two stages decision making process

We analyze a sequential decision making process, in which at each stepthe decision is made in two stages. In the rst stage a partially optimalaction is chosen, which allows the decision maker to learn how to improveit under the new environment. We show how inertia (cost of changing)may lead the process to converge to a routine where no further changesare made. We illustrate our scheme with some...
